Fractional Art

Fractional Art, otherwise also known as CryptoArt or Cryptographic Art, is a category of art related to blockchain technology. Emerging as a niche genre of artwork following the development of blockchain networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum in the mid-to-late 2010s, crypto art has rapidly grown in popularity largely due to the unprecedented ability offered by crypto-technology for pure digital artworks to be bought, sold or collected by anyone in a decentralized manner.

Crypto art refers to a work of art using blockchain technology in the form of a non-fungible token, abbreviated as NFT. This technology makes it possible to make a digital work of art authentic and unfalsifiable or to guarantee the right of ownership of a physical work.

Although there is no agreed definition for the term, there are currently two common interpretations among crypto artists and their collectors. The first concerns artworks with a cryptographic theme or those with topics focused on culture, politics, economics or philosophy that have to do with blockchain and cryptocurrency technology. The second and more widespread definition concerns digital artworks that are published directly on a blockchain in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFT), which makes it possible to own, transfer and sell an artwork in a cryptographically secure and verifiable manner.

However, confusion can often arise when attempting to formally define cryptographic art as the grey areas and nuances make it somewhat difficult. For example, blockchain technology has also been used to publicly register and authenticate pre-existing physical works of art in order to differentiate them from fakes and verify their ownership via physical trackers or labels. It is unclear whether such artworks can be classified as crypto art.

The NFT, which is stored in a blockchain, contains an identification code that guarantees its provenance. An NFT-authenticated digital artwork is unique, which guarantees its rarity and makes it valuable. The NFT makes it possible to own and collect digital artworks.
